When John Elledge married his sweetheart, Whitney Alexander, in Oregon last month, guests were able to retreat into a smoke tent, complete with 13 different varieties of marijuana and a budtender to help them with their selections.

The groom, who works as a professional pot grower in California, told Tribune Media the guests were thrilled by the couple’s version of an open bar.

“The oldest person in the tent was an 81-year-old woman who hadn’t smoked weed since the 1960s,” Elldredge said. “She loved it.”

The Elldredges are by no means alone. Instead, they look to be on the cutting edge of a new trend.

When Lauren Meisels and Bradley Melshenker tied the knot in Colorado earlier this summer, their gift bags for guests included a pre-rolled joint, a lighter, and marijuana-infused lip balm, The New York Times reported. The pot-themed wedding also featured buds and pot leaves adorning table centerpieces, the bride’s bouquet, and the groom’s boutonniere.

The wedding planning website The Knot has noticed the sudden demand for weed weddings. It reported that Denver-based Edible Events, a company that specializes in producing bring-your-own-bud soirees, is working with a handful of brides-to-be on incorporating pot into their bridal showers and bachelorette parties.

“I didn’t want a traditional bridal shower,” said Jennifer Gargotto, who works in the industry. “But I did want to play all of the games and it [weed] is a great way to expose my friends to the industry, and the way we see it. It’s a chance to demonstrate how classy it can be and hopefully calm some nerves and help people get to know each other before the wedding.”

“We’re going to start thinking of cannabis like alcohol, and we’re moving towards regulating cannabis like alcohol and normalizing its consumption,” said Edible Events’ Jane West. “It’s the new wine. I think Colorado will see a lot more destination weddings for this reason.”

Christianna Lewis works for Denver-based The Hemp Connoissuer magazine, and of course she and her fiancé wanted weed to be part of their wedding.

“Initially my fiance wanted to have an area for vaporizing, but because of the venue we chose it won’t be at the actual wedding,” Christianna said. “We even thought about trying to do something in our bouquets because it’s how we met, even if we’re not smoking at the wedding.”
